Offshore Challenges

Offshore Challenges

You may have heard of Ellen McArthur. Ellen sailed this huge tri-maran around the world to break the World Record for the fastest single handed circumnavigation of the globe in 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes, 33 seconds…

Ellen did her part....
…. And then we did her welcome home party!

Ellen’s onshore team were unsure if she would break the world record and not wanting to bring bad luck by forward planning the welcome home they waited until 2 weeks before when they realised she was in with a chance and it was all hands to the pumps!

JBE worked to set up the full infrastructure for the welcome home which centred on the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. This included Press Centre, power distribution, internet access, fencing, toilets and all other elements together with a massive branding exercise, with the added complication of ensuring that both sponsors (B&Q UK and Castorama France) were equally covered. The unsuing media coverage resulted in B&Q winning the 2006 Hollis awards for Sports Sponsorship, ESA International Sponsorship and Overall Best Sponsorship.

Once Ellen had landed safely with the world record under her belt, Offshore Challenges decided they would like to do a London Welcome home celebration on the Thames, ending up at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. This was exactly 1 week after the Falmouth event. Everyone involved helped JB Events, including Greenwich Council, the Metropolitan Police and the Port of London Authority to pull out all the stops and over ten thousand people came to welcome Ellen home.
